Description
Is there, and if so, what is called archaeological poetry? Why is it worth rethinking the poetry of the age of modernity, which strives to produce reality and material presence, from an archaeological perspective? Did the dialogue between the modern and the ancient really break off at the end of the 19th century, or can we use the paradoxical term to speak of a classical avant-garde? The volume offers a small cross-section of the researches of the Germanist author with an antiquarian education. The monograph first examines Walter Benjamin's concept of ancient ruins in the first third of the 20th century, reviving the term, and then presents a range of archaeological poetry from Rainer Maria Rilke to Gottfried Bennen, Marie Luise Kaschnitzon, Yvan Gollon and Erich Arendt to Durs Grünbein. The author's German-language publications present the nearly decade-long research that forms the basis of the book.
