Description
György Bölöni, who died in 1959 at the age of 77, is now mentioned in connection with his famous documentary book, The Real Ady, written in 1934 and published several times since then, which is misleading in many ways from the point of view of his life and his work. As a former participant in the spiritual and political struggles aimed at the civil democratic transformation of the country, Ady naturally respected his friend and comrade in arms in the past, and he still respects him today, but even this aversion cannot make us forget that there were periods in his life when his motives and goals were morally based and his views and actions proved to be wrong and even harmful due to his noble intentions, but his left-wing commitment, which over time became a dogma. The belief in a single book also led to the narrowing of his oeuvre in another way, as the famous Ady book distracted attention from other areas of his writing, including his epoch-making literary and art criticism work, which played an important role in the birth and rise of modern Hungarian culture in the last century. The author, who is known as both a literary critic and art critic, revises the previous positions regarding Bölöni's individuality and work in both respects, and attempts to formulate a more authentic picture of his career in both human and artistic terms, which, in addition to the positives, also addresses the negatives of his life's journey and his life's work.
